When a car accident happens, who is to blame?

That's always a hard one to call. Like for instance, last night I was about to get out of a taxi and when I opened the rear passenger door another car came down the road and hit the door as it opened. The driver of that car was obviously going too fast for such a narrow road and seemed slightly intoxicated. The taxi driver was operating without a license, just filling in for a friend for an hour. But obviously, I was the one that caused the accident by opening the door. But who was really to blame?
